Millions of people know John Tempesta for his thunderous drumming. Over the past four decades, he’s powered some of heavy music’s most influential bands, bringing unmatched precision and groove to every stage he steps on.

But ask John who really runs the house, and the answer comes without hesitation.

“Miss Luna,” he laughs. “The queen of the house.”

Luna wasn’t part of some carefully planned search. She found John through a friend who volunteers with a small dog rescue. One photo was all it took.

“She could barely make it up my stairs she was so little,” John remembers. “I asked if I could keep her overnight… and the next morning I woke up looking at her thinking, ‘What am I going to do, give her back?’”

That was the beginning of an incredible friendship. Rescued off the streets of Barstow, Luna quickly became much more than a pet.

“She’s my best friend,” John says. “She’s the perfect dog.”

Every morning starts the same way. Luna is already awake, ready to hike, head to the dog park, or simply say hello to everyone she meets. According to John, she’s fearless.

“She wants to start the party. She’ll walk right up to any dog and bark like she’s saying, ‘Come on, let’s play!’”

Anyone who’s seen John behind a drum kit knows he brings that same energy wherever he goes. When he’s on tour, Luna is never far from his mind. Friends FaceTime so she can hear his voice.

“She starts barking and howling the second she hears me,” he says. “It just puts me in the best mood. I usually end up having a great show after that.”

After weeks on the road, there’s one moment he looks forward to more than anything.

“When I get home, she hears the car before I even get to the front door. I can hear her barking from inside. Then I open the door and she’s jumping all over me. There’s nothing better.”

For someone who has performed in front of thousands of fans around the world, the best audience is waiting at home.

Luna has even earned her own soundtrack. If she could choose one song, John doesn’t hesitate.

“Black Dog by Led Zeppelin,” he laughs. “She’s black, she’s a dog… and it was one of the first songs I ever learned on drums.”

Beyond the laughs, Luna has changed the way John sees the world.

“Dogs are just so honest,” he says. “The way they look at you… They’re caring, they’re sweet, and they love unconditionally. Looking at Luna inspires me to be more loving with people.”

That’s the magic of dogs. They don’t care how many records you’ve sold, how many arenas you’ve played, or how many miles you’ve traveled. They’re simply happy you’re home. And maybe that’s why, after a lifetime of making music that moves people, John’s greatest rhythm isn’t found behind a drum kit. It’s found on a morning hike with Luna by his side.
